چکیده

We numerically model the coronal mass ejection (CME) event of October 28, 2003 that erupted from active region 10486 and propagated to Earth in less than 20 hours causing severe geomagnetic storms. The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model is formulated by first arriving at a steady state corona and solar wind employing synoptic magnetograms. We initiate two CMEs from the same active region, one approximately a day earlier that preconditions the solar wind for the much faster CME on the 28th. This second CME travels through the corona at a rate of over 2500 km s driving a strong forward shock. We clearly identify this shock in an image produced by the Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) C3, and reproduce the shock and its appearance in synthetic white light images from the simulation. We find excellent agreement with both the general morphology and the quantitative brightness of the model CME with LASCO observations. These results demonstrate that the CME shape is largely determined by its interaction with the ambient solar wind and may not be sensitive to the initiation process. We then show how the CME would appear as observed by wide-angle coronagraphs onboard the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft. We find complex time evolution of the white-light images as a result of the way in which the density structures pass through the Thomson sphere. The simulation is performed with the Space Weather Modeling Framework (SWMF). Subject headings: MHD, coronal mass ejections, shock waves, numerical modeling

Direct Detection of a CME-Associated Shock in LASCO White Light Images

The LASCO C2 and C3 coronagraphs recorded a unique coronal mass ejection on April 2, 1999. The event did not have the typical three-part CME structure and involved a small filament eruption without any visibile overlying streamer ejecta. The event exhibited an unusually clear signature of a wave propagating at the CME flanks. The speed and density of the CME front and flanks were consistent wit...

Interplanetary coronal mass ejections that are undetected by solar coronagraphs

[1] From February 2003 to September 2005 the Solar Mass Ejection Imager on the Coriolis spacecraft detected 207 interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICME) in the inner heliosphere. We have examined the data from the Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph (LASCO) on the SOHO spacecraft for evidence of coronal transient activity that might have been the solar progenitor of the Solar Mass Ejectio...

A Model for Patchy Reconnection in Three Dimensions

We show, theoretically and via MHD simulations, how a short burst of reconnection localized in three dimensions on a one-dimensional current sheet creates a pair of reconnected flux tubes. We focus on the post-reconnection evolution of these flux tubes, studying their velocities and shapes. We find that slow-mode shocks propagate along these reconnected flux tubes, releasing magnetic energy as ...

Time Domain Analysis of Polar Plumes Observed with the LASCO/SOHO Coronagraph

The polar regions of the solar corona exhibit during solar minima very faint ray-like structures which apparently outline the lines of polar magnetic field. Usually they are named plumes in the solar coronal literature. In order to understand the spatiotemporal characteristics of these plumes we analyze a sequence of 400 continuous observations covering a period of 3 days. For such analysis we ...

First Vla Observations of Nonthermal Metric Bursts Associated with Coronal Mass Ejections Detected by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory

We present the first observations of nonthermal decimetric burst emission of the Sun using the new 400 cm (74 MHz) system at the VLA. Our VLA observations were carried out in collaboration with the Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph (LASCO) and the Extreme-Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory spacecraft. Full-disk observations at 400 and 91 cm w...
